Get a Reddit API key
You don't need a key to use threadshot.app. With one, you can paste any Reddit link instead of sending the post from Reddit. All it needs is the client ID of an app on your own Reddit account.
- Sign in to Reddit, then open reddit.com/prefs/apps.
- Click are you a developer? create an app... (or create another app... if you already have one).
- Give it any name, such as threadshot.app.
- Choose installed app. It has no secret, which is all threadshot.app needs.
- Enter
http://localhostas the redirect URI. Reddit's form asks for one and threadshot.app never uses it. - Click create app. Your client ID is the short string shown under the app's name. Copy it.
- Go back to threadshot.app and paste it into the Client ID field.
Which app type?
- Installed app: cannot keep a secret, so it has none. Pick this one.
- Script: runs on hardware you control and has a secret. Paste the secret into threadshot.app's optional Client secret field. It only has access to your own account.
- Web app: meant for a service on a server you control. You don't need it here.
Can't create an app?
Reddit asks builders to read its Responsible Builder Policy first and may need to approve access before it lets you create an app. If you can't get a key, send posts without one using the iOS Shortcut, Safari extension or bookmark. Each reads a post from the Reddit page you already have open.
